He studied among other things. with Rimsky Korsakov at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, came to Tbilisi in 1883 as a conductor and music director and in 1893 as a composition professor at the Moscow Conservatory. From 1906 to 1922 he was director of the Moscow Conservatory.
