Marshall Bartholomew was born in Belleville, Illinois on March 3, 1885. He was educated at the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University (B. Phil., 1907), the University of Pennsylvania (Mus. B., 1909) and the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. Bartholomew directed the Yale Glee Club from 1921 to 1953.
