Janssen, Werner Alexander (01 June 1899–19 September 1990), composer and conductor, was born in New York City, the son of August Janssen, a well-known restaurateur, and Alice Boeckman. Because his father was opposed to his son’s career in music, Janssen was responsible for supporting his own education at Dartmouth College by playing the piano in theaters and dance halls as well as attempting to sell popular songs he had written.
