Juan Luis Ruiz de la Peña (Vegadeo, Asturias, October 1, 1937 - September 27, 1996) was a Spanish theologian, brother of professors Juan Ignacio and Álvaro Ruiz de la Peña.When the Civil War broke out, his family, Catholic and conservative, left Oviedo for Western Asturias, seeking refuge. At the end of the war, Juan Luis completed high school at Colegio Hispania in Oviedo. In January 1954 he entered the Oviedo Seminary and was ordained a priest in 1961. Later, he furthered his studies in Rome, at the Gregorian University, where he was taught by the Jesuit Juan Alfaro Jiménez. He also studied at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, specializing in piano and organ.He was appointed professor of Eschatology, giving lessons on Theological Anthropology and Theology of Creation, and initiated a dialogue with Marxist philosophy.
