Abbiate was a cellist and a composer. Well-known around Europe for his virtuosity on the cello, he was regarded as "le Paganini du violoncelle". He failed to have the same succes as a composer, and after his "Concerto pour violoncelle et orchestre" (1895) wasn't well received in Paris, he did not return to that city.
