Ödön Farkas

Ödön Farkas (Jászmonostor, January 27, 1851 - Cluj-Napoca, September 11, 1912) was a composer and music teacher.
In accordance with the will of his parents, he first studied engineering. He enrolled at the Budapest Academy of Music after its opening in 1875, where he graduated from the upper composition department. He was a student of Kornél Ábrányi and Sándor Nikolics. From 1879 until his death he lived in Cluj-Napoca and became the director of musical life. He was the director of the conservatory. His son, the talented violinist János Farkas, died of lung disease at the age of 29. He was an excellent singing teacher and in 1882-83 he was also the conductor of the Cluj-Napoca Theater. His famous students were Erzsi Sándor and Ferenc Székelyhidy. He also taught music theory to Pacsrác Kacsóh. He was a popular composer, writing mainly operas and chamber music. His operas and operettas striving for the Hungarian style were also presented in Budapest.
