When I went to a workshop...
(more) given by Eltjo Haselhoff (Dutch fingerstyle guitar player, look him up on Google...) he remarked that you could make a fingerstyle arrangement for this song, using the bass line from Tommy Emmanuel's version of Blue Moon. I tried to figure it out or myself, and this is what I came up with.
The original song is in the key of G, but I put it in C, to stay closer to Blue Moon... The chords don't exactly match the ones given in the Monty Python Song Book, but it's a pretty good approximation.
Intro: Actually the same as the verse, but slower in tempo, a bit ad lib.
Verses: The easiest way to learn this is to start with the underlying chord progression (see chord diagrams). After that, it's quite straightforward to add the melody on top. Also, it helps to grab the full chords, even if you don't play all the notes. Especially
the A and D chords - the first time around, they're minor chords, but at the end of the verse they're major. The minor/major change is in the strings you don't actually play, but when you grab the full chords, you'll hear the difference!
Finally, you should vary the timing in the melody line of the different verses (like with the words of the song). The original song has three verses (not counting the intro one), but I tend to skip one. With two verses, I can do some variations, but without
the actual words, the third time gets a bit boring...
Chorus: I didn't bother with the chord names here, it's something like C - Am - F - G with a walking bass line underneath...
Again to add some variety, I like to do the chorus in three positions. The first one (after the intro) is simple. In the second version, when I move the "whistling part" up an octave, it is essential to grab the notes on the bottom string with your thumb.
Similar with the third version (key change, one note up!)
